In this special blogcast, released to honor National Whistleblower Day 2023, Burnes Center Senior Fellow Seth Harris spoke with Siri Nelson and Stephen Kohn, the executive director and the founding director of the National Whistleblower Center (NWC), respectively. This blogcast also features Dr. Toni Savage, a former contracting officer with the Army Corps of Engineers in Huntsville, Alabama, and Jane Turner, a former FBI Special Agent. Both Savage and Turner told the stories of their experiences as whistleblowers and explained why the experience made them even more dedicated to seeking justice.
Siri Nelson is the Executive Director at NWC and an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern University School of Law. She served as an Associate Attorney and Policy Counsel at Kohn, Kohn, and Colapinto, the nation's leading whistleblower law firm, where she worked closely with anonymous whistleblowers, legislators, and regulators. She is widely published and widely quoted in the press on these issues. She also serves as an Editor & Legislative Correspondent at Whistleblower Network News.
Stephen Kohn is one of the nation's leading whistleblower attorneys. A founding director of the NWC, he is the author of eight books on whistleblower law. He is practicing whistleblower attorney and serves as the Chairman of the Board of NWC. Stephen is a partner in the whistleblower law firm Kohn, Kohn and Colapinto.
Dr. Toni Savage is a whistleblower who worked as a contracting officer with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Huntsville, Alabama Support Center. She won accolades for her integrity and outstanding performance on the job. Then, in 2006, she reported a pattern of practice of illegal contracting activity resulting in millions of dollars in contracting fraud.
Jane Turner is a former FBI Special Agent who led a highly successful program for women and children on Indian land in North Dakota from 1998 to 1999. Then, after she discovered and exposed the FBI's failures with the program, she went on to fight the FBI's retaliation in court for nearly nine years. Turner also faced retaliation when she uncovered people stealing personal property and evidence related to the 9/11 terrorist attack on the United States.
